Overview
The enchanting Danube bike tour begins in the medieval city of Regensburg, a city with a history of over 2000 years. Unlike many other German towns, this one had little damage from the Allied air raid in World War II, and therefore has a nearly intact medieval city center. The tour ends in Passau, the City of Three Rivers. It is here that the Danube, Inn, and Ilz Rivers converge. This lively port town is a marvel to see in its romantic river setting, complete with the great Veste Oberhaus (a fortress built in the 13th–16th century) that overlooks the town.
As a 5-day tour, this cycling vacation is ideal for those looking for a short itinerary packed with the wonders of the Danube.
Highlights

Day 1: Arrival in Regensburg
The journey starts in Regensburg which is the most northerly point of the Danube. This best-preserved city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it's no wonder why. The Old Town is very well preserved and a perfect place to take an afternoon stroll. Visit the Town Hall, the Cathedral of St. Peter, St. Emmeram’s Basilica, and so much more!Sample accommodation: Hotel Münchner Hof Regensburg
Day 2: Regensburg - Straubing, 31 mi. (50 km)
The route follows the mighty Danube which curves along the broad, flat landscape. You will pass Wörth Castle and find yourself in the middle of the so-called "Gäuboden" landscape. Today's destination is the town of Straubing, which dates back to the 13th century. Many of the historic buildings in this town come from this period, such as the symbol of Straubing, the Stadtturm, and the Herzogsschloss, the large castle on the Danube.Sample accommodation: Hotel Theresientor Straubing
Day 3: Straubing - Deggendorf, 25 mi. (40 km)
You'll cycle through Bogen, a little gem of a village. While there are more churches in this town than most, the one that steals the show is the Pilgrimage Church of Maria Ascension as it is the oldest of its kind in Bavaria. You will continue pedaling on through Pfelling and Mariaposching and then on to the Benedictine Abbey of Metten, before coming to Deggendorf, the gateway to the Bavarian Forest. Gothic and Baroque architecture dominate the pear-shaped old town.Sample accommodation: Hotel Höttl Deggendorf
Day 4: Deggendorf - Passau, 38 mi. (60 km)
The last cycling stage leads you to the historic little town of Vilshofen. The cobblestoned Old Town sits right on the water and is a perfect place for a stroll. In no time at all, you will reach your final destination, the three-river city and former diocesan town of Passau. Be sure to visit the jewel of the city: Saint Stephen’s Cathedral. This Italian Baroque-style building is home to the largest organ outside of the United States. It's also worthwhile to visit the Höllgasse, the artists' mile in Passau's Old Town, where the beautiful old buildings are full of studios, workshops, & galleries.Sample accommodation: Hotel Passauer Wolf
