Florence to Rome
Italy Bike Tour
Tuscany – Umbria – Latium
Through the green heart of Italy, this cycling adventure is filled with many treasures, and what better place to start than Florence?! Situated in the heart of Tuscany and the capital city of the region, Florence was unequivocally the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, and proudly boasts innumerable artistic emblems, including works by Botticelli, Giotto, Leonardo, Michelangelo and Donatello. Long ruled by the Medici family, Florence has many crowning architectural jewels, including Santa Maria del Fiore (known as the Duomo), the nearby Campanile tower and the Baptistery buildings as well as the Ponte Vecchio Bridge.
Through the valleys of the Apennines and the ever-luminating Lago Trasimeno, the journey continues past dense oak forests to Perugia, Umbria's capital. This fortified town contains the highly impressive San Lorenzo Cathedral, Palazzo dei Priori and Arco Etrusco. Soon thereafter is the inviting city of Assisi, the “City of Peace” and renowned birthplace of St. Francis, who founded the Franciscan order. Past finely restored manor-houses and medieval monasteries, the beautiful Romanesque façade of the Duomo in Spoleto will invigorate your sights with just following, the Duomo of San Giovenale in Narni. And just as the saying goes, "all roads lead to Rome", and so shall ours. As the beating heart of the Renaissance, The Eternal City of Rome bears many architectural firsts. From Michelangelo’s Piazza del Campidoglio to the Coliseum (the largest amphitheater built in the Roman Empire) and the Pantheon, Rome remains a city of wonder whose influential architecture can be found world-wide.
Skill Level
Moderate; self guided or group hotel tourModerate self guided or group hotel tour with distances of about 27 miles per day over rolling hills with some steep climbs. The stages from Florence to Assisi are mostly flat; then hilly. Routes make use of mainly small streets, country lanes and lightly-trafficked side streets. Only some very short sections are on main streets. There are fascinating stages along the bank of the Trasimeno Lake, along rivers and through the untainted nature of Umbria.

In the morning a trip to Arezzo by train. Visit to the splendid churches and palaces in this city of antiquities and gold. By bicycle on beautiful lanes through the wide plain of Valdichiana, constantly accompanied by the hill and mountain silhouettes of Southern Tuscany. You pass Cortona, up to the Trasimeno Lake, and the battlefield where Hannibal fought against the Romans. Wonderful view over Trasimeno Lake. Overnight stay in a village by the Lake.
DAY 3: Passignano sul Trasimeno - Perugia, ca. 22 mi. (35 km)
Along the lake to Torricella. On small and secluded lanes to Perugia - through wide fields, softly hilly landscapes and idyllic villages. Sightseeing tour in Perugia: buildings like the San Lorenzo Cathedral, Palazzo dei Priori and the Arco Etrusco are impressive.
DAY 4: Perugia - Assisi, ca. 19 mi. (30 km)

DAY 7: Terni/Narni - Rome, ca. 40 mi. (65 km + train)
The first stage from Narni to Calvi is quite hilly. Enjoy the calmness and seclusion of the small Umbrian town at the foot of the 'Sabine Mountains', before you go by train into the hectic large city of Rome. Dinner and overnight stay near the Termini station. "All roads lead to Rome", it is said and that's why we are here.
