In urban, architectural, and artistic terms, Spello is an extremely interesting town, containing many features dating back to the Roman age. This morning you have time to visit Spoleto, which is built on a hilltop and is surrounded by evergreen woodland and hilly countryside. The historical center is, for the most part, still inside the medieval town walls. Spoleto is very famous for its music festival ‘dei due mondi’ held in the month of July. Don’t forget to visit the cathedral with its beautiful frescoes by the Florentine painter Filippo Lippi.Cycling through a slightly undulating landscape you will already see Montefalco from a distance. At the foot of this town, you can choose to continue through the valley directly to Bevagna or to visit Montefalco, but to get to this town you first have to conquer a steep climb (470 m). Montefalco is also known as the ‘balcony of Umbria’, because of its fantastic panorama. The Franciscan church, now a museum, is decorated with magnificent 5th and 16th-century frescoes by artists like Benozzo Gozzoli and Perugino. Montefalco is well-known for its excellent wines, Rosso di Montefalco d.o.c. and Sagrantino d.o.c.g , produced on the sunny slopes around the town, and of course its almost impossible to leave the town without tasting them in one of the many wine bars.

There are two routes possible today. The shorter route, a downhill ride leads to Bevagna. It's medieval square and Romanesque churces take you back in time. The longer version leads along quiet country roads passing S. Maria Degli Angeli where you can visit the Franciscan basilica. Under its impressive dome still lies the humble little chapel Porziuncola, where St. Francis once came to pray. The shorter version follows from Bevagna the Assisi-Spoleto bike path. As you approach Assisi, you'll see it from a distance because, like many other Umbrian towns, it is built on a hilltop.Sample accommodations:

Extra Info
Skill Level — Moderate–Difficult
This Italian bike tour is moderate to difficult on hilly terrain with average daily distances of approximately 23 to 43 miles per day. The ride entails some steep climbs. Approximately 80% of the tour is on quiet country roads and some bike paths (in Umbria there are not as many dedicated bike paths). In Perugia, you are likely to experience a bit more traffic, but with the rest of the towns having between 3,000 and 25,000 inhabitants, you will cycle among relatively rural surroundings. Don’t let the difficulty level discourage you, there are electric bikes available.
