| Description: |
From one capital to another… As Europe's 3rd largest city and Germany's capital, Berlin is a cornucopia of cultural and historical significance. First recognized as a city in 1251, Berlin has seen its share of war, which one is poignantly reminded of when passing through the remnants of the famous Brandenburg Gate that once fortified the city. Now very much restored and rebuilt (including the Charlottenburg Palace - the city's most beautiful Baroque building), the city sits peacefully along the Spree River and is worth a sightseeing tour.
Cycling further north through the Brandenburg region, you'll encounter a luscious landscape that used to serve as famous hunting grounds and is filled with wildlife, including eagles. Now reserve parks, such as the Müritz National Park, highlight the region. Once East Germany's busiest and largest seaport (which is still quite active), Rostock is now more commonly visited for its restored Altstadt, which include medieval churches and museums. One of note is St-Marien-Kirche (St. Mary's Church), which was spared from war damage and boasts an astronomical clock from the 1400's, as well as an enormous organ dating from 1770, and a large tower with wonderful panoramic views. Shopping is also a favorite, especially along the highly-photographed Kröpeliner-Strass!
From Rostock, you'll enter Denmark via ferry and pass along dikes, small forests and beautiful beaches. As you cycle from coastal town to coastal town, you'll come across thatched cottages as well as villas and grand houses surrounded by wide fields and arable land before reaching Copenhagen. This Danish capital colorfully sits on the island of Sjaelland. A tour of the city is good to start at Radhuspladsen, the Town Hall Square built in the Italian Renaissance style, and then on to the famous Tivoli Gardens - the amusement park that tops them all! Additional popular highlights include the Little Mermaid statue, the Rosenborg Castle with impressive royal gardens and home of the country's Crown Jewels, as well as the opulent Christiansborg Castle.
