| Description: |
Washington, Idaho & Montana This tour is a 3 state adventure filled with scenic beauty, flora and fauna as well as including the great trails of the Silver and Spokane valleys and Montana’s mountain trails. It is the best of three worlds— pedaling along the beautiful Spokane River where the river rushes and bends in concert with nature, paved rail bed riding along the spectacular Lake Coeur d’Alene, high mountain cruising along 20 miles of packed gravel through long tunnels and mile high trestles. The first day of cycling starts from downtown Spokane (“The Lilac City”) in Washington through Riverside State Park along the Spokane River Gorge. Bike/pedestrian bridges bring you over the surging river. There are nice vistas overlooking the river and the city of Spokane that sits among huge basalt outcroppings and shear cliffs with swallows nesting. Some of the wildlife you may encounter soon after leaving downtown include moose, deer and a large array of birds including osprey, blue heron and bald eagle.
Following Spokane, the route follows the Centennial Trail along the glistening Spokane River to the resort town of Coeur d’Alene, known as the Lake City in Idaho. It is listed in Patricia’s Schultz’s 2003 book 1000 Places to See Before You Die. Surrounded by forest, the city is the largest in the Idaho Panhandle and a popular golf destination. The Coeur d'Alene Resort Golf Course is considered one of the best in the United States. Its 14th hole features the world's only movable floating green. In Idaho you will come across every shade of lush green along with marvelous mountains and marshland, birds of bright feather with blue heron and bald eagles flying overhead, and perhaps moose swimming lakes, deer romping through fields and, maybe even a turtle and some Canadian geese sharing your groomed trail. From views of snow clad mountains to the historic Silver Valley villages and riding the shorelines of lakes and rivers, this tour is quite an adventure and runs primarily on maintained bicycle paths, thus car-free!
